    • From abandoned mine to solar farm: The amazing Kidston Solar Project

  • When the mine closed, something died in this area. Everyone just disappeared.

Now there’s a solar farm. I’ve got a job, how about that eh? “

Kidston, Queensland was the biggest and richest goldmine in Australia at the time. It closed in 2001, leaving behind a ghost town.

Literally using the abandoned old mine holes, Kidston has created the world’s first solar power and pumped hydro storage plant.

The project will be a 270 megawatt farm, Queensland’s largest. Combined with the pumped hydro project, that’s enough to power almost 280,000 homes.
